Catherine E. Markle, President, Landscape Architect, has a background in public and private sector landscape architecture and land use planning. She has coordinated projects up to $2.5 million, from research and design through approval and implementation. Ms. Markle has been involved in all aspects of landscape architecture including site planning, construction, maintenance and reclamation since 1979, gaining experience working for other firms and for herself.
Prior to forming Alpine Design & Planning in 1987, Ms. Markle was Associate Landscape Architect with Mountain West Environments, Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She subsequently worked as Planner and Landscape Architect for the City of Steamboat Springs. While with the City, Ms. Markle was responsible for the review of and recommendations on new development proposals, land use, and zoning issues. She participated in the development of the City’s Community Development Code and Land Use Plan as well as many of the individual area plans. She acted as liaison between the City and most community organizations such as the Chamber Resort Association and Routt County Regional Planning.
After leaving the City staff, Ms. Markle served on the Steamboat Springs Planning Commission for three years, acting as Vice-Chairman for two years.
Ms. Markle has completed a wide variety of residential and commercial landscape projects in the mountain resorts of Colorado and in California specializing in alpine communities with experience ranging from ranch development and golf course construction, to formal European and American garden design, commercial retail/restaurant spaces and naturalized residential gardens and water features.
Ms. Markle received a B.S. in Landscape Horticulture from Colorado State University in 1981 and also attended the Harvard Graduate School of Design for intensive study in Interior Landscape Design. Ms. Markle is a Colorado Licensed Landscape Architect #589 and member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Urban Land Institute.
